Listening to the Iceland Locals
Iceland is a very unique country. Not only is the culture one of a kind, but the landscape very memorable. Those who have never visited this area before are often taken aback because it is just so different than what they are used too. However, you can learn a lot from those who live there. Here's what to say, do and avoid according to the locals.
Be Eco Friendly
Those who live in Iceland tend to be very eco friendly. They can spot a tourist a mile away just based on what they are drinking out of. Don't use plastic water bottles and try to stay away from plastic in general. Never, ever litter and if you do see a piece of trash on the ground be sure to stop and pick it up instead of walking over it. The locals care quite a bit about their land and you should too.
Know How To Speak
There really is no need to be formal with the locals. Always address them by their first name only. Unlike in most parts of the world, most locals have very similar last names. Their last name is usually just a combination of the first name of their father and the word for boys or for girls. There really is no need to use their last name when speaking to them. Also, if you do meet a local and don't know what to say, talk about the weather. It's quite unpredictable and locals love to talk about it.
Pay Attention To The Rules
There are so many experiences that you can be apart of in Iceland. No matter what you do though, you need to pay attention to the rules. For instance, if you visit a geothermal pool make sure you shower beforehand. Not doing so is considered to be gross. When going out to a restaurant don't tip as it can be seen as offensive by some.
Enjoy Yourself
Despite the weather, locals always enjoy themselves. It's not uncommon to see them at the Blue Lagoon when it's frigid or for them to stay out late during torrential downpours. While you are in Iceland, make sure you do the same thing. Stay out late and enjoy the nightlife, eat an extra dessert or go try a new adventure that you are a little leery about.
